Pottstown Dragon Warriors
To encourage Pottstown area adults and youth to pursue physical and mental fitness through paddling, teamwork, and self-improvement. To provide others the opportunity to better themselves.
It was the Pottstown Athletic Club’s goal to establish a unique way to offer team building activities to local companies and organizations, and a way to mentor area youth by providing on-the-water sports on the Schuylkill River in downtown Pottstown. The dragon boat program is sponsored by fundraising, direct donations, and the support of the Pottstown Health and Wellness Foundation.
In 2013, a competitive women’s team was formed from members of CrossFit Pottstown and other women in the area. The Pottstown Dragon Warriors competitive team has continued to excel at an astounding rate. The team took home the gold medal C Division in the October 2013 International Dragonboat Regatta, won the bronze medal B Division just seven months later at the Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival, and recently placed 5th in the A Division – the highest rank division – in the October 2015 race. The competitive team is a diverse group of individuals whose main goal is to increase positive community engagement and spread athletics and fitness.
The Pottstown School District has also established a team – The Draco Scholars. This team has won the Educators’ Cup and proved that practice and teamwork can bring newer paddlers up to speed very quickly!
The Draco Scholars and Pottstown Dragon Warriors spend time working together along with their coach in order to learn the art of paddling a dragon boat. Team members encourage one another to never give up and to learn from the person seated in front of you. Youth paddlers are mentored in and out of the boat. This style of working together teaches the self-confidence to compete and win.
The generous support of businesses and local residents makes it possible for our teams to exist, participate in races, and create opportunities in our community for active and healthy living. Any donations and proceeds will benefit the team directly by paying for race day fees and practice time on the water.
For donation purposes, reference the Pottstown Dragon Warriors Tax ID # EIN: 47-1137007.
Interested in paddling
During the warmer months, we offer an “Open Paddle” to the community as a fun, family boating activity each month. The sessions are offered free-of-charge and open to everyone registered for a lesson time slot that day. Organizations are also encouraged to register a reserved session for their employees.
It takes team work in order to propel a dragon boat forward in an effective, efficient way. A dragon boat provides a unique way of teaching individuals how to work together in order to accomplish one common goal. Everyone learns how to step up to the plate and take an active role in the responsibility of the boat and its destiny. Dragon boat paddling is a team-building tool used by many organizations in the greater Philadelphia area. Now, the same opportunity is available right here in downtown Pottstown.
Organizations like the Pottstown School District have seen positive results by offering the dragon boat program throughout their organization.
